2024 Student Travel Research Competition Guidelines

Generously sponsored by IHG Hotels & Resorts

Student Research Competition

Each year the GTTP worldwide holds a competition for the best school research project and in 2024, the theme will be “Create a social media campaign, based on research, to attract talent to Travel & Tourism”.

Each participating country will decide how to organise its national competition and deadlines for entry will vary depending on the school schedules.  Questions relating to the competition should be directed at the GTTP Director in your country.

Submission Timeline

Regardless of how each country organizes the national competition, the winning entry from each country must be submitted to the GTTP on or before Tuesday October 1, 2024.

Here are this year’s guidelines and some sources to kick start your research.

National Competition

Students are asked to work in teams and come up with imaginative ways to attract talent to the sector with a social media campaign which could help build an effective “Talent Pipeline” through a social media strategy.

Remember, you do not have to look at all the questions. Choose what will make an interesting research topic for your team.

Teams submit their entries to their national competition. Each GTTP member country determines how it will organize its national competition, what is required to enter, and when the entries must be submitted.

All questions on entering your national competition should be directed to the GTTP Director in your country.

International Conference

Competition Process

The overall winning team in each country will be invited to send a ONE teacher and two students to the GTTP International Student Teacher Conference, which will be held in Europe this year.  The planned dates are 2024 Sunday 10 – Wednesday 13 November. Flights and accommodation are provided by our Global Partners for the two students and Teacher.  Some meals are also covered by our Global Partners.

Participants have an opportunity to meet GTTP Global Partner Advisory Board Members and other industry professionals, with some down time for sightseeing and networking with other GTTP students and teachers from around the world.

Preparing for the International Conference Presentation

The way your team presents its findings is for you to decide, but your presentation should be professional, and available in a PowerPoint or Prezi format.  Your team will be allocated a 20-minute slot to present, followed by a 10-minute Q&A from students, teachers, and members of the Global Partner Advisory Board who may ask you questions about your project.

Deliverables

Each winning team must present their research report to include the methodology, working photos and a lesson plan by the teacher showing how the information can be used in a classroom setting.  In addition to the research report, teams need to prepare a presentation on how they will share their experience with the other participants.

Your presentation must be forwarded to GTTP prior to your travelling to the Student/Teacher Conference.   Please review the GTTP website for samples from previous years.

NOTE TO STUDENTS: Do not borrow images from the internet unless the website states clearly that you may use the images. Taking images without permission is called “copyright infringement” and can result in expensive financial penalties. GTTP will remove images from case studies if it believes there may be a copyright problem.

Some ideas for creating a social media campaign

  1. Rethinking recruitment for tourism through online activity.   What would you consider changing about the way people are hired through online sources for tourism jobs? \
  2. What is social recruiting and how does it work?  Share how your country or community get people interested in working in tourism.
  3. Outline potential benefits/challenges of an online recruitment strategy. List the advantages and disadvantages of hiring online.
  4. How to build brand presence online.  How can you make people notice your brand online?  Can you provide examples from your country.
  5. How to use campaign data analytics to evaluate online success.  How can you use data to check if your online efforts to hire people are working?
  6. Explore multiple social media channels available to achieve results.  Highlight and evaluate the different channels and platforms that are available to recruit online.
  7. Create a value proposition with a social media strategy for talent acquisition.  Build a social media presentation to help attract talent to the industry.

Remember, you do not have to look at all the questions. Choose what will make an interesting research topic for your team.

Note: When we talk about ‘talent’ in recruiting employees, we are looking for people who have the right skills and abilities for the job.

Employees want to find individuals who can do the job well, whether it is being good with numbers for an accounting job, or being good with people for a customer facing role.
